Casual Clothing Labels: Neck Labels, Care Labels and Hang Tags
Neck labels, care-information labels and hang tags serve different roles in a casual-clothing brand package. Decide what each item communicates and where it belongs, then approve the wording and artwork. Decorative branding should not be mistaken for the product information required for the intended selling market.
In this guide
Assign each label a clear purpose
| Item | Buyer decision |
|---|---|
| Brand/neck label | Brand identity, finished size and attachment position |
| Size identifier | Size naming consistent with the approved chart |
| Product-information label | Confirmed information appropriate to product and market |
| Care information | Instructions with an appropriate supporting basis |
| Hang tag | Brand or product messaging that does not replace required information by assumption |
Verify the information before releasing artwork
For covered US textile products, FTC guidance addresses fibre content, origin and the responsible business. Its separate care-labelling guidance requires a reasonable basis for instructions on covered garments. Scope and exceptions matter, so obtain product/market-specific review rather than copying a label from another category or jurisdiction.
Connect artwork to the actual garment
- Use revision-controlled text and approved translations where needed.
- Show finished dimensions, placement and attachment method.
- Check legibility and the way the label sits in the assembled garment.
- Keep fibre, component and care decisions consistent with the final specification.
- Withdraw superseded files when the material or wording changes.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating a hang tag as a universal replacement for permanent product information.
- Copying another supplier's composition or origin statement.
- Approving attractive artwork while leaving required wording unreviewed.
Prepare the next decision
Send an artwork register identifying each label's purpose and current text. Confirm product and market requirements, then request a garment-level placement or attachment proof before production release.
