Clothing Shrinkage and Colourfastness: Questions to Resolve Before Production
Resolve shrinkage and colourfastness questions by defining what will be evaluated, under which conditions and against which agreed acceptance basis. Do not use a generic wash promise or one fabric swatch to settle every question about the finished garment. Materials, construction, decoration and care instructions must be considered together.
In this guide
Separate dimensional change from colour behaviour
Dimensional change concerns the garment or material dimensions after a defined process. Cotton Incorporated's technical background explains why construction and processing matter to shrinkage discussion. Colourfastness is exposure-specific: AATCC lists different assessments for laundering, rubbing, perspiration and light. A result for one exposure should not be treated as proof of all the others.
Write an evaluation brief that can be compared
| Field | Information to agree |
|---|---|
| Sample identity | Model, fabric/colour, trims and decoration represented |
| Condition | Care or exposure process relevant to the intended product |
| Measurement | Defined points and before/after comparison method |
| Appearance | Which colour change, transfer or other observation is assessed |
| Acceptance | The agreed criteria and who reviews the results |
Use the result to control the final specification
- Keep the evaluated configuration and result together.
- Identify temporary materials that limit the conclusion.
- Ask whether a changed dye, trim or decoration needs another review.
- Confirm the basis for care information before approving label artwork.
Mistakes to avoid
- Inventing a universal acceptable shrinkage percentage.
- Treating one colourfastness result as a guarantee for every exposure.
- Changing components after evaluation without asking about the effect.
Prepare the next decision
Send the intended care/use conditions with the material and colour schedule. Ask the responsible specialist and supplier to agree the evaluation and acceptance basis before production approval.
