How to Prepare an Apparel Tech Pack
An apparel tech pack is a controlled set of instructions for developing and reviewing a style. Its value comes from making decisions traceable: which drawing, measurements, materials and artwork belong to the same revision. It does not need decorative presentation, but it must let the buyer and manufacturer identify omissions without guessing.
In this guide
Give every page a common identity
Put the style code, revision date, base size and colourway reference on the relevant documents. Show front and back views, then use numbered callouts for pockets, closures, seams and other details. A reference image can explain intent, but distinguish what must be copied, what may change and what is illustrative only.
Assemble the documents that drive the sample
| Document | Useful content |
|---|---|
| Construction sheet | Drawings, detail callouts and assembly priorities |
| Bill of materials | Fabric, lining, trim, label and component references |
| Measurement sheet | Measurement points, method, base size and tolerances for agreement |
| Grade rules | How the approved measurements change by size |
| Branding and packing | Finished artwork dimensions, placement and pack instructions |
| Revision log | Change, reason, affected documents and approval status |
Resolve contradictions before issuing the pack
Check that the drawing and material list show the same closures and component counts. Ensure the measurement method makes clear whether a value is taken flat, around the garment or under a defined stretch condition. Use one shared issue list for undecided materials rather than hiding uncertainties in different email threads.
- Replace ambiguous words such as standard with a drawing, method or agreed reference.
- Keep requests for supplier proposals visibly separate from approved requirements.
- Withdraw superseded files when issuing a revision.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sending a measurement table without showing where measurements are taken.
- Mixing old artwork with a new garment revision.
- Presenting a concept image as an already approved sample.
Prepare the next decision
Issue the pack for technical review first. Ask the supplier to return questions and assumptions, then record the agreed changes before the next sample or quotation revision.
